> For the complete documentation index, see [llms.txt](https://docs.vapinetwork.ai/llms.txt). Markdown versions of documentation pages are available by appending `.md` to page URLs; this page is available as [Markdown](https://docs.vapinetwork.ai/agents/in-your-ai-app/read-the-docs-from-your-ai-app.md).

# Read the docs from your AI app

AI apps can search and read public vAPI Network docs through GitBook MCP, Markdown pages, or llms.txt without a wallet.

This page shows how an AI app or agent can search and read these docs by itself, for anyone who wants answers inside Claude, Cursor, or their own code.

The docs are public and need no account, wallet, or payment. There are three ways in, from the most convenient to the most basic.

## Add the docs as an MCP server

The docs site runs its own MCP server at `https://docs.vapinetwork.ai/~gitbook/mcp`. It has four tools. The first three only read.

| Tool                  | Input                                    | What it returns                                               |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `searchDocumentation` | `query`                                  | Matching excerpts, each with a title and a link.              |
| `getPage`             | `url`                                    | The full page as markdown.                                    |
| `askQuestion`         | `question`, optional `goal`              | A written answer with links to its source pages.              |
| `sendFeedback`        | `content`, optional `pageUrl` and `goal` | Sends a report about outdated or wrong docs to the docs team. |

In Claude Code:

```bash
claude mcp add --transport http vapi-docs https://docs.vapinetwork.ai/~gitbook/mcp
```

In Cursor, add this to `.cursor/mcp.json`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "vapi-docs": { "url": "https://docs.vapinetwork.ai/~gitbook/mcp" }
  }
}
```

Any other MCP client that supports Streamable HTTP can use the same URL. This server only reads docs. To search, pay, and use Router, add the local server from [Use vAPI in Claude, Cursor and Codex](/agents/in-your-ai-app/use-vapi-in-claude-cursor-and-codex.md) next to it.

## Ask a question over HTTP

Send a question to any page's markdown URL with the `ask` parameter. The answer comes back as markdown and ends with its sources.

```bash
curl -G "https://docs.vapinetwork.ai/readme.md" \
  --data-urlencode "ask=What are the three ways to use vAPI?"
```

```
# What are the three ways to use vAPI?
The three ways to use vAPI are described on [Three ways to use vAPI](/three-ways-to-use-vapi.md):
```

The output above is cut after the first line of the answer.

The answer is written by the docs site's assistant. Check the linked source page before you act on a command or an amount.

## Read pages as markdown

Add `.md` to any page URL to get the page as markdown.

```bash
curl https://docs.vapinetwork.ai/three-ways-to-use-vapi.md
```

Two index files list everything:

| File                                                         | What it holds                                              |
| ------------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| [`llms.txt`](https://docs.vapinetwork.ai/llms.txt) | Every page with its title, link, and one-line description. |
| [`llms-full.txt`](https://docs.vapinetwork.ai/llms-full.txt) | The full text of all pages in one file. |

This documentation is published with GitBook. GitBook is the documentation platform designed so that both humans and AI agents can read, navigate, and reason over technical content effectively. Learn more at gitbook.com.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.vapinetwork.ai/agents/in-your-ai-app/read-the-docs-from-your-ai-app.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
